Meet the Founder: Shannon Szymanski

Hi there!

My name is Shannon Szymanski, and I’m a proud young adult living with Cerebral Palsy. I’m also the founder of Life Through CP, a personal advocacy platform dedicated to disability awareness, education, and inclusion.

After graduating from high school in 2013, I pursued several post-secondary programs, including Rising Stars and Macomb Academy. However, persistent accessibility barriers—particularly inadequate restroom accommodations—limited my ability to fully participate and thrive in those environments.

In response, I returned to my former high school to enroll in a post-secondary program built around Community-Based Instruction (CBI)—an evidence-based model designed to equip students with disabilities with real-world experiences and practical life skills. This program helped me develop greater independence, confidence, and workplace readiness, laying a strong foundation for my adult life.

While I initially believed that traditional post-secondary education was the right path, I’ve come to understand that alternative routes might have been better aligned with my personal goals and needs.

It wasn’t until I transitioned out of school in 2020 that I discovered my true passion: disability advocacy. I began collaborating with nonprofit organizations and leveraging social media to share my story, raise awareness, and promote systemic change.

One organization that has played a pivotal role in my journey is the Danny Miracle Angel Network (DMAN) Foundation. I became a DMAN client in 2015, and their support provided more than just services—it gave me a sense of purpose, community, and lifelong friendships. Their belief in me helped me find my voice, and in 2025, I was honored to become DMAN’s official ambassador.

In addition to my work with DMAN, I’ve been privileged to partner with organizations like the Boundless Babe Society, a women’s empowerment program for individuals with disabilities.

Today, through Life Through CP, I remain committed to using my voice and lived experience to challenge stigma, celebrate disability pride, and advocate for a world where all individuals—regardless of ability—have the opportunity to thrive.
